How Can I Pray for Christian Missionaries in Africa?
Prayer stands as one of the most powerful tools believers possess for supporting God’s kingdom work across Africa. Scripture calls believers to pray without ceasing, and nowhere is this more vital than in missions. When we pray, we join God’s work of drawing hearts to Himself.
1. Pray for God to open the hearts and minds of people who need Him. Less than 2 percent of North Africa’s population is Christian,[1] there are so many people there who have not yet heard the name of Jesus. According to Pew Research, while 62% of sub-Saharan Africa identifies as Christian, vast regions remain unreached. This disparity highlights the need for continued missionary work.
2. Pray for the Holy Spirit to draw people to Himself through the faithful service of Christian missionaries in Africa. Only God can change hearts. Missionaries plant and water, but God gives the growth.
Through faithful intercession, believers partner with those on the front lines of sharing the gospel message. Prayer provides spiritual covering for missionaries facing daily challenges. Pray for boldness for the missionaries, especially when they face opposition. Research from Global Frontier Missions indicates culture shock and opposition contribute significantly to missionary challenges. Adapting to new languages, customs, and living conditions can be overwhelming.
3. Pray against wicked and evil forces that want to hinder the spread of the Gospel. Scripture reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual powers of darkness. Missionaries need prayer warriors interceding on their behalf. When Paul requested prayer, he asked specifically for boldness to proclaim the mystery of the Gospel.
Over half of the African population is under 15 years old. Africa has the youngest population in the world, with more than 60% of the continent’s population under age 25, according to the World Economic Forum. By 2030, young Africans are expected to make up 42% of the world’s youth.
4. Pray for missionaries to have an effective ministry to the youth and children. May the children and teenagers be drawn to these programs and the message of God’s love. This demographic reality represents both tremendous opportunity and urgent need for ministry to young hearts. The decisions young people make today will shape Africa’s spiritual landscape for generations. Youth ministry creates lasting impact as young believers grow in faith and become future leaders.
5. Pray for church planting to be successful in areas where there is no Christian church. New congregations become centers of hope, transformation, and community in regions where open doors for ministry exist. The early church in Acts spread through establishing local fellowships where believers gathered.
6. Pray for people to be drawn to the new churches and see the light of Jesus. Through these fellowships, God’s kingdom advances as brothers and sisters in Christ gather to worship and serve. Local churches provide ongoing discipleship, community support, and bases for further outreach. They become lighthouses in their communities, demonstrating Christ’s love through both word and deed.
7. Pray for missionaries to be hopeful and encouraged. May God give each missionary a sense of His calling and His hope. Lausanne Movement research indicates approximately 1,500 North American ministry workers leave their work monthly due in part to burnout. According to missionary attrition studies, lack of adequate care ranks among the top preventable reasons missionaries leave the field.
8. Pray for strength and stamina for each missionary. May they have refreshment and restoration physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. These faithful brothers and sisters in Christ need sustained prayer support to persevere in their calling. Missionary work demands much—long hours, cultural stress, language barriers, and separation from family. The emotional toll of serving in difficult circumstances can deplete even the most dedicated workers. Your prayers provide vital spiritual sustenance.
May God protect the missionaries and keep them safe during travel. Travel in Africa can present unique challenges, from remote areas with limited infrastructure to health concerns. Missionaries often journey to distant villages on difficult roads. Ask God to surround them with His angels and grant them journey mercies. Protection extends beyond physical safety to include emotional and spiritual wellbeing during times away from home base.
9. Pray for local Africans to join the call to be trained as national missionaries. National missionaries bring invaluable cultural understanding and language fluency to their ministry contexts. They know the customs, understand the worldview, and can connect with people in ways outsiders cannot. Indigenous workers often prove most effective in reaching their own communities.
May God bless training programs to reach many potential pastors and missionaries, training them to serve their cities and communities. Through these open doors for training, indigenous leaders are equipped to reach their own people effectively. Quality training prepares them to handle Scripture accurately, lead with wisdom, and minister with compassion. As local believers step into leadership, the church becomes truly rooted in African soil. These national workers will continue ministry long after foreign missionaries depart.
Here are some ways to pray specifically for GFA World in Africa:
1. Pray for the first missionary teams. May God use them for His glory. These pioneers establish foundations for long-term ministry impact.
2. Pray for the first partner churches in Rwanda. Pray for God to help people to grow in their faith and that they will reach out to impact those who don’t yet know Jesus. May God help them to understand the needs in their communities and how best to help. Strong local churches become multiplying centers of hope and transformation. As believers mature in faith, they naturally share Christ’s love with neighbors and family.
3. Pray for the discipleship training and missionary outreach teams. Training equips believers to serve effectively and share God’s love with confidence. Solid biblical foundation enables new believers to stand firm and grow.
4. Pray for the Sisters of Compassion (women missionaries who’ve received special training to effectively serve the poor in difficult places like slums and leprosy colonies) as they seek to meet the needs of women and care for them with love and kindness. May God bless their outreach. Women missionaries often have unique access to serve other women in culturally sensitive contexts. Their ministry brings dignity and hope to marginalized women.
5. Pray for medical missions teams as they seek to meet tangible needs and share the love of Jesus. Medical ministry opens hearts by demonstrating Christ’s compassion through healing and care. Physical healing often creates openness to spiritual truth.
6. Pray for God’s mercy for the people of Africa, especially those who are hungry and struggling with extreme poverty. Compassionate service in Jesus’ name brings hope to the most vulnerable. Meeting physical needs demonstrates God’s love in practical ways.
