Bible Verse About Giving to Others

How GFA World Put’s Into Practice Bible Verses About Giving to Others

There are many Bible verses about giving to others throughout both the Old and New Testaments. The book of Proverbs has many entreaties to care for those in need, as do the four Gospels and the epistles. In Deuteronomy 15:10, the Israelites were told to be generous regarding the poor man among them: “You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand.” Later, Paul wrote a very similar message to believers: “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

As we read each Bible verse about giving to others in need, it is clear that God wants His people to give openly, generously and happily. Other Bible verses about giving to others reveal the reason believers should give. Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me … Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me” (Matthew 25:35–36, 40). By caring for and giving to others, it is like Christians are caring for and giving to Christ Himself. Jesus’s words in Matthew echo the prophet Isaiah, who wrote that God’s people are to “share your bread with the hungry, and … bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, … cover him, and [do] not hide yourself from your own flesh” (Isaiah 58:7).

These Bible verses about giving food to others are more relevant today than ever.[1] According to data highlighted by The Borgen Project, roughly 12% of the global population experiences hunger, with the vast majority of those affected (98%) residing in developing nations across Asia, the Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa.[2] Indeed, the Global Hunger Index places most of the world’s hungriest countries in either Africa or Asia.[3] And lack of food has lasting consequences. In her report on chronic malnourishment, Luren Weber details how child malnutrition stunts growth, weakens immune systems and impairs brain development, resulting in decreased cognitive abilities and reduced lifetime productivity.[4] All of that means that hunger and malnutrition trap children in the cycle of poverty, making it difficult for them to succeed in life and provide for their own children, thus continuing the cycle.

GFA World is among the organizations around the globe that are working to combat hunger and poverty. Our Child Sponsorship Program is freely offered to kids in villages across South Asia and now in Africa, too. For the tens of thousands of enrolled children, the program means hope for a brighter future through practical assistance according to the needs of the community. This can be tutoring assistance, nutritious food to supplement the food they get at home, medical care, or required school supplies. Our field partners also supply income-generating gifts to those in need—sewing machines, farm animals, fishing nets and more—so families can have a sustainable way to afford more and better food for themselves and their children.[5]

Kaila and Sabinna[6] lived in a region of steep slopes and vast valleys. People there lived in poverty, and most of the villages only had school up to third or fifth grade. In 2015, even their small hope for the future was destroyed. An earthquake and its aftershocks devastated their village, destroyed their homes and took the life of Kaila’s younger sister. Their families had no choice but to move and try to start over. In their new town, they struggled to make ends meet, cultivating small plots of land. The new town did have school, but Kaila’s and Sabinna’s parents couldn’t even feed their children let alone afford the school supplies or tutors necessary for completing their education.

Not all hope was lost, however. GFA workers were already ministering in the new town where Kaila and Sabinna had moved. After the earthquake, the workers immediately began providing physical and spiritual aid, giving groceries to families, helping recover lost items from the rubble and listening to grieving hearts. Both girls were enrolled in GFA World’s Child Sponsorship Program. They received opportunities their families never could have afforded: nutritious food and study help, as well as exercise with the other kids. They were taken care of with gifts of food while schools were closed, and as schools prepared to reopen, Kaila, Sabinna and other children received tracksuits and school supplies—notebooks, pens, a ruler and a geometry box. Through the education and care of GFA’s Child Sponsorship Program, the girls obtained a lifesaving opportunity. They could now build toward a brighter future for themselves and their families.

As you reflect on each Bible verse about giving to others, consider joining us in our ministries to give to the poor, needy and hungry across Africa and Asia. For just $35 a month, you can sponsor a child, helping to free them from the cycle of poverty and showing them God’s love at work.[7] There are also other ways to obey the Bible verses about giving to others with GFA, including gifting vocational training, income-generating tools or farm animals.
