Bible Verse About Giving to Others

Which Bible Verse About Giving to Others Do We Need to Know?

If there is one Bible verse about giving to others that summarizes all the others on the topic, it would be the Golden Rule, which appears in various forms throughout Scripture. One instance is Matthew 7:12: “Whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (cf. Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:39–40; Mark 12:31; Luke 6:31; Romans 13:8–9; Galatians 5:14).

This standard makes it clear how believers are to treat others―exactly as they would like to be treated. Do you want others to respect you? Then respect them. Do you want others to speak kindly to you? Then you should speak kindly to them. If you were unable to feed or clothe your family, what would you want others to do for you? Jesus’ command asks that His followers show love proactively; it is not enough to simply avoid doing bad to others.[1]

GFA World understands loving proactively. Through our various ministries across Africa and Asia, as well as through specific events, we help alleviate hunger and offer hope to the malnourished. One example is GFA-supported workers organizing events to mark World Food Day, which was established by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization as they spearhead the effort to end world hunger. Teams ministering to the needy and undernourished in places such as hospitals, leprosy colonies, slums and orphanages served food to men, women and children, showing them God’s love and care. Some of the recipients were families living in a village only accessible by foot, who have to supplement their meager farming income by collecting and selling bamboo and herbs from the forest. After being served a cooked meal, an 80-year-old villager said, “I feel so good that someone who does not know me cared for me and visited me.” A woman in the village was inspired to follow the workers’ example and decided to visit the sick in the coming days. Our Child Sponsorship Program, which helps children be successful in their education, also hosted World Food Day events. God’s love flowing through GFA missionaries and workers empowered them to help others and reveal His love to those who were being served.[2]

As you reflect on these Bible verses about giving to others, consider the part you could play. You could donate time, money or other resources to the people around you. You could also partner with us by sponsoring a child, giving toward an income-generating gift or helping provide warm clothing and blankets to comfort those suffering from cold. It doesn’t take much to make a difference in people’s lives and show them God’s love.[3]
