Access to Clean Water

Clean Water Christian Organization

Every two minutes, a water-related disease is responsible for the death of a child under the age of 5. And every minute, a newborn baby dies as a result of contaminated water and poor sanitation.[1] But GFA World, through initiatives for clean water, a Christian organization, is saving lives through its efforts to “serve the least of these”.

GFA World believes that access to clean water is a basic human right, and we’re doing everything we can to provide safe, easily-accessible water to people who otherwise suffer—and sometimes die—from waterborne diseases.

In 2019, we drilled more than 4,000 Jesus Wells in Asia in areas of great need. Local pastors and churches maintain these wells. GFA World has also supplied tens of thousands BioSand water filters to families in need—12,243 in 2019 alone.

Before GFA World drilled a Jesus Well in Garjan’s village, he and his wife didn’t drink enough water because it was so difficult to obtain.[2] Drought regularly dried up their water sources and during rainy seasons, much of the water they had was contaminated. Villagers bathed and washed clothes in a nearby pond, which animals also drank from, and often contracted skin diseases and digestive problems. One day, Garjan and his wife ended up in the hospital as a result of waterborne illness.

The village depended on farming and livestock, but lack of water made it difficult to sustain themselves.

Thanks to GFA World, everything changed for people in Garjan’s village 20 years ago. GFA installed a Jesus Well, providing clean, fresh water to satisfy all of the community’s drinking, cooking, washing and agriculture needs.

“I was the happiest person to draw water and get pure drinking water,” Garjan said.

“Our goal is to provide a long-term solution in the water-starved villages and communities we serve”, said GFA founder K.P. Yohannan, “giving everyone access to fresh water and providing the training they need to keep their new well pumping clean water for decades to come.”[3]

Each Jesus Well, located by the local church, displays a sign in the local language spreading hope through Jesus’words: “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:13-14).
