Life of A Christian Missionary

How Do Modern-Day Christian Missionaries Serve Through GFA World?

The modern-day Christian missionaries supported through GFA World serve their communities in Africa and Asia in unique ways, often in the same neighborhoods or regions where they grew up. That gives them an extra advantage; they know the language well and the culture too!

Some of these ways these GFA World missionaries serve include:

  • Through income-generating gifts: GFA missionaries and pastors are on the lookout for families who need a helping hand. Income-generating gifts can make a life-changing difference for these families and may come in the form of a pair of goats, chickens or cows. These animals create new opportunities for regular income—by selling eggs, milk or the animals’ offspring. Other income-generating gifts that missionaries provide are items like sewing machines and pull-carts. These practical gifts can make a tremendous difference in meeting the needs of a family.
  • Vocational training: Breaking the cycle of poverty often comes when a person acquires additional skills. When someone learns a new skill, like candle making or tailoring, he or she has a new way to provide income for their family.
  • Community projects: Entire neighborhoods are helped when these missionaries facilitate the building of things like community toilets or church buildings. Another very impactful gift is the addition of a clean water well to the community. Children are often tasked with walking for hours to fetch water, so when water is available in the neighborhood, those children can go to school instead of spending their days hiking to collect it. Clean water also helps with the health of the entire community, and the risk of waterborne illness dramatically decreases.
  • Literacy: Many GFA missionaries are trained in teaching literacy classes. When women learn to read, write and do basic math, they are qualified for more diverse employment opportunities, they can help their children with schoolwork, and they can read signs and go about daily life with more awareness. Women who know how to read are also less likely to be taken advantage of in the marketplace and in employment contracts. They can also read God’s Word!
  • Sharing the Good News: GFA national missionaries bring the love of God to those in their communities. They bring hope to the hopeless and compassion to the hurting. GFA World provides them with the tools, transportation and resources they need to minister effectively.
