What Does It Mean to Proclaim the Good News?

To proclaim the good news to the poor was a prime objective of Jesus’ mission on earth. As the prophet Isaiah foretold, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives” (Isaiah 61:1). GotQuestions explains that in the Old Testament, “the poor” encompassed those without inheritance, the financially impoverished, the socially inferior, the oppressed and those humbly dependent on God.[1]

This understanding of “the poor” continued into the New Testament, and Jesus himself quoted this passage at the beginning of his ministry, applying it to Himself, saying, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21).[2] Christ’s message was one of freedom from sin through His love, His life, His death and His resurrection. That is the same good news we proclaim today because there are still poor people who need to hear about Jesus and His love.

It was Jesus’ mission on earth to declare the good news of Himself to the poor, so it should be His followers’ mission as well. GFA World uses many practical avenues to show the poorest of the poor how much God loves them. We enable donors around the world to support national missionaries, who have a passion and a burden to serve their own people. They know the language and culture, and they can move freely in areas restricted to outsiders.[3]

GFA World also has a Child Sponsorship Program, where believers from across the globe can help children in Africa and Asia. Monthly gifts make it possible to provide things like nutritious food, clean water, healthcare, basic sanitation facilities and education. When their physical needs are met, these children and their families and communities are lifted out of poverty and feel the love of God at work in their lives.[4]

Another way we show God’s love and proclaim His good news is through providing income-generating gifts. Gifts like farm animals or sewing machines allow families to meet their needs and feel God’s love and care deeply in their lives.[5]

GFA World needs partners in this effort to share the good news with the poor, as Jesus did when He was on earth. Consider sponsoring a missionary or a child or providing a life-changing gift to those in need as a way to show people God’s love in action.
