What Does the Bible Say About Funding for Missionaries?
At GFA World, we understand that funding for missionaries is essential to their effectiveness. We learn from 1 Corinthians 9:14 that missionaries deserve our support. Paul writes, “Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel” (NKJV). Paul says that receiving support from others is appropriate.
Again, in Philippians 4:16-17, Paul shares that the early church supported missionaries. “For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account” (NKJV). The Christians were able to aid Paul in his missionary journeys. He thanks them for their gifts, but also for their cheerful giving.
1 Timothy 5:17-18 adds, “Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture says, ‘You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,’ and, ‘The laborer is worthy of his wages’” (NKJV).
You can have a part in what God is doing through national missionaries in Africa and Asia.
Our missionaries are effectively reaching their communities, and they rely on the gifts of people across the world to do so. When you sponsor a national missionary through GFA World, they will be like Paul and appreciate your aid as they go on their own missionary journeys. They travel to nearby villages and further off places, sharing God’s Good News and meeting the needs of those in poverty.
Acts 20:35 gives us an important reminder, “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (NKJV). What a great reminder to us of the importance of giving! Perhaps Paul is remembering the words spoken by Jesus, “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38, NKJV).
