Who Is Doing Christian Missionary Work in Nepal?

The environment for Christian missionary work in Nepal presents considerable difficulties as the nation transitioned, in 2008, from a kingdom with a national religion, to a secular state, with laws restricting the propagation of religious beliefs. Despite these legal constraints, missionaries continue their work, with Korean missionary Pang Chang-in stating, “God works through us to create miracles in Nepal.”[1] Missionaries share the love of God with the Nepalese people, who are spiritually and financially poor, giving them a chance to escape generational poverty and hopelessness. This message of hope and love is changing more and more lives. In 1951, there were no Christians in Nepal, and there were only 458 believers in 1961. By 2011, there were about 376,000, and estimates from 2023 placed the number of Christians around 545,000.[2]

One of the ways GFA World’s national missionaries serve the people in Nepal is by meeting physical needs, especially after natural disasters. For example, on April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit central Nepal, and just two weeks later, a 7.3 magnitude aftershock hit, making it the nation’s most deadly disaster ever.[3] There were several more aftershocks in the following months. With hundreds of churches already established in Nepal, GFA World was uniquely positioned to provide immediate aid in areas others couldn’t reach. This disaster relief came in many forms, including the distribution of food, like rice, lentils, oil, tea and salt, as well as practical supplies, blankets and temporary shelters. In addition, GFA World’s Sisters of the Cross spent time showing love to traumatized children by playing games with them, telling stories and handing out candy and noodles.[4]

Another example of GFA World’s compassionate care in Nepal in the wake of the earthquake is helping rebuild houses. Pastor Deepit heard about two families who had lost their homes and were struggling to find other sources of shelter. He organized an effort to build two sturdy, temporary shelters for the families. A team, made up of twenty-one Bible college students and ten believers from Pastor Deepit’s church, worked tirelessly to construct two shelters, which would house the families until they could find or build more permanent houses.[5]

GFA World’s national workers continue to support and care for the people of Nepal, but disaster relief is just one aspect of our Christian missionary work overseas. Our missionaries also help minister to the sick and provide income-generating gifts to those in poverty. You can help support them by sponsoring a missionary for just $45 a month.[6]
