Christian Missionaries

What Is a Christian Missionary? What Does He or She Do?

What is a Christian missionary? Christian missionaries spread the Good News of Jesus to people who are not yet followers of Christ. GFA World’s missionaries sacrifice personal comfort and safety to serve others, especially those waiting to hear the Good News for the first time.

A remarkable case is that of Pastor Talon, who transformed a previously yet-to-be-reached community into a thriving ministry.[1]

Talon started his missionary work fifteen years ago when, as part of his Bible college training, he began working with a GFA film ministry team that traveled to distant regions to spread the Good News. The mission took the team to a mountainous village, which was utterly unaware of Jesus. Talon carried his equipment with him as he walked across rivers to fulfill his mission of reaching this community.

During this trip, Talon and his team stayed with Magni and Sala, who had longed for a child for many years. The team prayed frequently for Sala, and six months later, Sala received the news that she was pregnant. It was a miracle! Magni and Sala became the first villagers to believe in Christ. People who had experienced the miracle then asked for prayer about their own difficulties, and one by one, they learned about Christ’s loving power.

This work of God motivated Talon to return to the village after his graduation and settle there, and he did so in 2010. More villagers then experienced healing and deliverance, finding hope in Christ as God used Talon’s dedicated ministry. Radu was one of them. His mental illness and violent behavior had caused him to endanger his community, but then Talon prayed for him, resulting in his complete healing. God used these miraculous events to lead additional individuals to faith, causing the church membership to gradually grow.

Yet, opposition also arose. Local people who opposed the Good News worked to force Talon to leave by blocking his access to water and shelter. However, Talon established three Jesus Wells in the community, which provided clean drinking water to all residents. This unconditional act of kindness prompted people to listen to the Good News.

Talon enlarged his ministry operations through his marriage to a local believer, Kadri, who shared his commitment to serving others. The community received continual support from the couple, who worked together, offering prayer and spiritual guidance, as well as hands-on assistance. Kadri organized women’s prayer sessions while teaching sewing classes to create opportunities for local women to establish an earning potential.

God’s work in this village became apparent over time. The community, which previously had no believers, now has 150 church members, along with five smaller fellowships located in surrounding areas. Pastor Talon, alongside Kadri, continues to provide faithful service despite difficulties, planting hope and observing God’s transformative power.
