What Are Bridge Builders, Meaning Those Who Connect and Forge Ties Across Common Lines of Conflict?
There is much conflict in the world, and the need is great for bridge builders, meaning we need peacemakers to connect opposing parties. We see these peacemakers in many areas of life—in race, culture, economics, politics, religion, to name just a few. These peacemakers are often not concerned about recognition or notoriety, but instead they seek to build trust between two groups of people and create solutions to meet a need.
A bridge builder, as defined by the Cambridge Dictionary, is “a person who improves relationships between people who are very different or do not like each other.” The term captures more than mediation — it describes the intentional work of forging connection where division has settled in. Across neighborhoods, workplaces, and regions, bridge builders invest time and patience into helping people see each other differently.
At its core, bridge building is about restoring human connection. It takes humility to set aside one’s own perspective long enough to understand another’s. Courage is needed to remain in a conversation when the easier path is to walk away.
Persistence matters, because trust is not built in a single conversation — it is earned through showing up again and again, even after misunderstandings. These qualities — humility, courage, and steady commitment — show up wherever genuine reconciliation takes root, whether between two neighbors or two communities separated by decades of tension.

Through the Bridge Builders community, monthly gifts support practical ministries that meet urgent needs in communities across Africa and Asia, as outlined in the GFA World Gift Catalog. All of this work is carried out through local workers who understand the language, culture, and specific challenges of the communities where they serve.
Not every bridge looks the same, because not every community faces the same obstacle. For a village without safe drinking water, a Jesus Well maintained by a local church becomes the bridge. For a mother who never learned to read, a literacy class taught by a trained woman missionary opens a door her own schooling never did. For a family trapped in generational poverty, a sewing machine and vocational training create a path toward sustainable income. Bridge building meets people where they are.
Poverty creates a mindset of hopelessness and the inability to dream of a better future.[1] When children or adults begin in one of GFA World’s programs, they don’t know how to dream. They’ve never even considered that life could be different. As they learn to read, write and gain vocational skills, they begin to see how their life can be different. They suddenly see that they could be a community leader, a professional, a pastor, a teacher. Mindsets begin to change.
When a woman learns how to use a sewing machine, she’s able to envision a better future—one where she can feed her children and send them to school. When a woman learns to read and do basic math, life opens up. She is suddenly qualified for more jobs, she can help her children learn, she can read street signs, and she is less likely to be taken advantage of in the marketplace. Literacy and vocational skills can transform a life!
